Without having read past the title of the re-blogged post below, I assume it is referring to the concept of Sweet Gams!'s slow and unceasing consumption of the interwebs:

I’ve been spending a portion of the week at the Casual Connect conference in downtown Seattle, a three-day extravaganza which highlights everything you could possibly imagine about the casual games business. This year, one of the hot topics of discussion has been “gamification,” the concept of rewarding users with virtual coins, badges or more for participating in online communities.

Nearly everywhere I go, the buzzword pops up. And, it is worth noting, not always in a positive way.

PopCap CEO Dave Roberts

PopCap CEO Dave Roberts kicked off his keynote address on Tuesday with 10 things he hates about the casual games business.

The #1 item on his list?

You guessed it: Gamification.

On Wednesday, at a press event, PopCap co-founder Jason Kapalka elaborated on Roberts’ remarks, telling GeekWire that he doesn’t have a problem with the concept of gamification.

In fact, he said rewarding customers has been around for a longtime, stretching back to the frequent flyer programs which are still very much in existence today.

What Kapalka can’t stand about gamification is the name. After all, he holds games as sacred products.

Creating a term like gamification does more to harm to the business because it actually dilutes down what a game means. And, in his view, a game has one simple goal: to be fun.

Foursquare and other similar services might be popular (and even useful for some), but they aren’t necessarily games, he said.

The term certainly has come on strong in the past 12 months. Scott Dodson, chief operating officer at Bobber Interactive, a Seattle company that brings game mechanics to personal finance, recalls doing a Web search for the term about two years ago. Google returned just four results, he said.

Now, according to a recent search, there are about 1.6 million results.

At this year’s Casual Connect conference there’s no shortage of panels about the concept: “Smart Gamification: Seven Core Concepts for Creating Compelling Experiences:” or “Gamification for Everyone: What’s your Strategy?” or “Gamification and Social TV: The New Way to Watch.”

The term has gotten such a bad rap that venture capitalist Tim Chang — an investor in Badgeville — called gamification the “dreaded G word” during his talk on Wednesday.

I thought I had actually escaped the gamification concept when I cut out of the conference on to do some work at a Starbucks.

Some folks from the conference sat down at the table behind me and started talking about their new service. And what was it about?

That’s right: Gamification.

If there was ever a more clear window into the damaged psychology of stage mothers I'm not sure I'd want to see it. This is one of those rare occasions in which the warping of the media (the slight slowing of the video) is actually less warped than the real-life occurrence it documented!
Note the disturbed looks on some of the hosts' faces, as well as the utter cluelessness of the possessed stage-mom clapping in misguided, vicarious ecstasy.

I apologize. As none or some of you know or don't care, I'm studying for the NY BAR Exam. Thus, my interwebical meanderings have been stymied as of late. As a result, there have been a dearth of Gams! postings on my behalf.

Both come from the same site, and both involve childhood-ness as seen from a different perspective.

I guess Wendy's realized that anyone training for their job could use a little trip out to deal with the fact that they were about to embark on a harrowing journey into the Fast Food Inferno that is Wendy's.

I recently came across the Codeorgan which is a little application that turns websites into music. First, let's listen to what this blog sounds like.

Pretty sweet...gams. The fun thing is the song will change slightly if you reload the page or click the link again, but the notes don't, just the rhythm and instrumentation. For some compare & contrast here's the sound of Spaghetti Tree.

Basically, the Codeorgan scans the website's code (right-click, view page source), takes out non-musical letters aka notes (it only uses A-G), and somehow decides what kind of rhythm to plunk on down. I'd love to see something similar that uses information from digital photos, it would be interesting to see if the music reflected the mood of the photograph (dark, bright, frantic, still, etc.).

I wanted to just put up a couple of videos of the awesome Horned Lizard that can squirt blood from its eye sockets at predators, who find the liquid foul, but YouTube put me on a much stranger path....

The strange part happened when I noticed certain videos popping up in searches including the words "lizard" and "eyes." The videos were all of former president Bush Sr, and it took me a little while to realize that the person who made the videos, YouTube user Humans Win, was trying to convince the viewers that Bush Sr, along with some other of the ruling elite, is actually a shape-shifting reptilian life-form not of this planet! I'm not really sure I can see the reptilian nature of Bush's eyes in the videos, but the dude seems convinced. Have a look for yourself:

I recently submitted a wonderful phrase to be included on your excellent and important site. It's a good phrase, one that captures just one of the myriad of amazing things about this Internet to which we've all grown so attached. My phrase was rejected. Rejected! I didn't even realize UD rejected phrases, I mean, most of the entries are either just regular words or people's names! There is NO reason "New York" should up there! None! And let's not forget the veritable panoply of elicit sexual terms and blatantly racist hate-speech included in your "definitions." Many of your entries also contain horrendous grammatical and spelling errors. Mine was well written.

Your site seriously needs to look deeply into your practices.

Strange Androidesque Lady Plays Various Percussion Instruments (Poorly)

I guess these videos were made for some kind of instructional video...which is odd because I'm pretty sure this lady is terrible at what she's doing & has no business instructing anyone to do anything ever.

Let's begin with this awkward bit of high-hat demonstration:

I saw a sign near Union Square in a new salon advertising "Ear Candle Therapy" that had a photo very similar to this one:

I had to find out more. Check Wikipedia for a great article. Some highlights:

"According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective"
The FDA says, "...the use of a lit candle in the proximity of a person's face would carry a high risk of causing potentially severe skin/hair burns and middle ear damage."
"Material that appears after ear candling, sometimes alleged to be earwax and toxins, was found to be residue from the candle itself."
"Although Biosun, a manufacturer of ear candles, refers to them as "Hopi" ear candles, there is no such treatment within traditional Hopi healing practices."

Sounds like a safe, effective procedure. Let's all go stick a lit candle in our ears! Sounds like a great idea!*

On the one hand, it's pretty cool from an engineering perspective, but on the other, it's a degradation of human-kind's greatest & most-expressive art form into something horridly soulless. In this previous post I said "it would be one thing if brainwaves were being interpreted into sound." Well, apparently that's what's going on in this video (well, not necessarily brainwaves, "but electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons within the brain"):

This is really cool, yes, but I imagine that witnessing this live wouldn't be so great...I mean, you'd just be staring at people sitting on stage staring into screens and such. Also, I'm pretty sure you can program anything to be triggered by anything. It would be one thing if brainwaves were being interpreted into sound, but I'm not sure that's what's going on here.
