Really Old Recordings, Part II

One of our favorite subjects to gam here at Sweet Gams is really old recordings. When those old recordings are from Thomas Edison, they go up immediately. And that's what we got here, a full LP of 'em!

Animated Japanese Folktale: The Stonecutter

Really Old Recordings

These awesome recordings found in the Archive's Edison Cylinder section of the 78 RPMs and Cylinder Recordings collection were originally recorded by Edison Records, the first record company ever (Edison as in Thomas Edison). Many of them are phonograph cylinders, the first way to record and reproduce music.

Bell Labs' Computer Speech-- Ancestor of HAL

Listen to this demonstration by Bell Telephone Labs of their Computer Speech from 1963. The computer sings "Daisy, Daisy" just like HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey, only this went down 5 years before 2001 which was made in 1968! Weird. Apparently, Kubrick took the idea straight from the Bell Labs demonstrations. Awesome.
